Karen Howell OBE Retires: A Tribute to a Healthcare Leader (2026)

A NHS leader steps down after an illustrious career, leaving a lasting impact on mental health services in Greater Manchester. But here's where it gets controversial...

Karen Howell OBE, the CEO of Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH), is retiring after an incredible 46 years of dedicated service. Her journey with GMMH began in June 2024, and now, after two years at the helm, she's ready to pass the torch.

"It's been an honor to lead GMMH," Ms. Howell shared. "I believe it's time for a new leader to carry the organization forward in its mission to provide excellent healthcare, create a great workplace, and continue its global leadership in research and innovation."

But why now? After such a long and successful career, why choose this moment to step away?

"After over four decades in the health and care sector, it's time for me to prioritize my personal life and my loved ones," she explained. "Like many public sector workers, my personal life has taken a backseat for too long. I'm excited to see what the future holds outside of the NHS."

During her tenure, Ms. Howell oversaw significant improvements at GMMH. She supported the trust's exit from the national Recovery Support Programme and led key initiatives, such as appointing a new board, restructuring governance, and reopening secure forensic mental health services.

Tony Warne, chair of GMMH, praised her leadership: "Karen has been a true transformational leader and a wonderful colleague. It's been an honor to work alongside her on our journey towards improvement."

Professor Colin Scales, acting CEO of NHS Greater Manchester, echoed these sentiments: "Karen's career has been exceptional, and her energy, determination, and passion as CEO of GMMH set her apart. She will be greatly missed by the NHS leadership community, Greater Manchester, and GMMH."

And this is the part most people miss... Retirement doesn't always mean slowing down. For Ms. Howell, it's an opportunity to refocus her energy and make time for her personal life and loved ones.

So, what do you think? Is retirement a well-deserved break, or should leaders like Karen Howell continue their work indefinitely? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
