Nick Diaz is back and aiming for the top! Despite a challenging period and a recent stint in rehab, the former UFC contender is not only planning a return to fighting but has his sights set on becoming a world champion once more.
For the past few years, the mixed martial arts world has been wondering about the future of Nick Diaz, a fighter who hasn't stepped into the octagon since 2021. At 42 years old, Diaz has been navigating a personal journey of recovery from substance abuse, and he recently shared an update from the Baja Rehab center in Baja California, Mexico. This interview offered a candid look into his sobriety efforts and his renewed determination.
And this is the part most people miss: Diaz revealed his ambition isn't just to compete again, but to add a world championship belt to his already impressive career. He expressed a strong belief in his ability to achieve this, stating, "I see myself becoming world champion and I think it’s easy money. It’s not like before. People are going to see a brand new me."
Diaz's path back to the cage has had its hurdles. He was initially slated to face Vicente Luque at UFC Abu Dhabi in July 2024, but the bout was postponed due to travel complications. It was then rescheduled for UFC 310 in Las Vegas, only for Diaz to withdraw for reasons that were not disclosed, leading to Themba Gorimbo stepping in.
During his prime, Nick Diaz was a dominant force in the welterweight division. He secured a Strikeforce title in 2010 and later challenged for both undisputed and interim titles in the UFC against formidable opponents like Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit. He often attributes his success and his ability to maintain sobriety to his unwavering focus.
"For me, I just think that I wouldn’t have made it this far if I thought that there was something that could stop me," Diaz shared. "That being the next guy I’m standing in front of or any obstacle. Substance abuse, right or wrong, I’m just very confident that I’m going to do better every year, every day."
In his discussion about his recovery, Diaz openly mentioned marijuana and alcohol as substances he had struggled with. He clarified that he never had issues with other drugs but found that associating with individuals who heavily abused harder substances was enough to make him re-evaluate his life. But here's where it gets controversial: While he associates with people who abused harder substances, he claims he never had an issue with them himself. He strongly advocates for seeking help, saying, "I definitely recommend treatment. I had so many friends die. I lost some really close friends and I couldn’t figure out how—This could have definitely saved their lives."
Diaz explained that he had achieved a three-year period of sobriety before a relapse, which ultimately led him to recommit to his recovery through rehab. His decision was also fueled by the dangerous environment his past choices had created. He recounted terrifying incidents, such as people driving by his house with loaded guns, which made him realize the gravity of his situation.
"People were driving past my house with fcking loaded guns and it scared the shit out of me," Diaz said. "Holy fck. I thought these motherfckers were ready to kill me and they were. That’s facts. These motherfckers were going to kill me."
Following a period of discord with his management and some close friends, Diaz committed to rehab. Despite describing his previous three-year sober stint as "a living hell," he is now on a path to recovery and remains confident in his ability to return to the pinnacle of his sport.
"I just want to thank my fans, supporters, and everybody that is going to be ready to tune in for my next upcoming fights," Diaz concluded. "We’re going to win a world title."
