The tale begins on a tragic note, with Vimy, a young male wolf, sustaining severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 17. But here's where it gets controversial... instead of a tragic end, Vimy's story takes an unexpected turn.
Vimy, named by the very person who hit him, a member of the Canadian Armed Forces named Blake, is now headed for surgery to repair his broken back legs. And this is the part most people miss... wildlife rescue and rehabilitation is a complex process, and Vimy's journey is just beginning.
After being initially treated at the Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre, Vimy will undergo surgery at the National Wildlife Centre in Caledon East. But his recovery doesn't stop there. He'll then be transported to the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary for a month-long rehabilitation process.
"We need to ensure he can walk, run, and hunt independently before releasing him back into the wild," explains Mon Keldsai, Assistant Director of Animal Welfare at Aspen Valley. "It's a delicate balance of providing support and allowing nature to take its course."
If all goes well, Vimy will be released back to the exact spot he was found, giving him a second chance at life in the wild. But why wait until spring or summer? Keldsai clarifies, "Animals rescued in winter often need the warmer months to recover fully, with more prey available to aid their healing process."
The events leading up to Vimy's rescue are equally intriguing. Blake, described as "kind-hearted" on social media, followed the injured wolf, who had crawled off the highway and hidden under an old vehicle. With the help of two OPP constables, they contacted the Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre, opting for rescue over dispatch.
"The extraction was a challenging feat, but with the help of Blake and the OPP, we were able to get Vimy to safety," shares a post on the Turtle Pond Wildlife Centre's Facebook page. "Thanks to their dedication, the wolf is now receiving the care he needs."
